I was part of a special Newberry Awards reading program in 5th grade (1961). AMOS FORTUNE was the first book about a black person I had ever encountered. I spent my High School & College years reading any black bios or fiction I could find, which was not a heck of alot.
Walter Mosley is such a wonderful storyteller. Highly Recommended! Have also read & enjoyed his Easy Rawlins mysteries.
